We learned about relative density through an investigation. First we found the mass of a clay ball, next we constructed a boat from the ball. We then tested to see if the boat was more or less dense than water. If the boat was less than water we added cargo until the boat sank.
We learned that mass is not what determines whether something sinks or floats - the shape does. The clay ball had the same mass as the boat but the boats floated and the clay ball sank every time.
The mass of the water displaced equals or is grater than the mass of the object the object will float.
